Andy's Lawn Care Services
Lawn Mowing - Lawn Mowing will be done on a 7 day schedule though out the lawn mowing season. In Minnesota there is normally around 22 to 24 times during the season that the yard will need to be mowed. The lawn will be cut around 3" to 3 1/2". This is the length that will make your lawn look great and keep the weeds out. The longer and thicker the grass helps prevent the lawn from getting taking over by weeds. The lawn mowing will include cutting of the yard, trimming around obstacles, and blowing off sideways and driveways. Top of Page

Core Plug Aeration - This should be done twice a year once in the spring and fall when the soil temperature is cool and not under heat stress. This process will take plugs out of the lawn that are about 3” in length. The plugs will decompose within a week or two and leave the lawn looking like new again. The normal mowing schedule will continue and the plugs will get mowed up into small pieces. Top of Page
Benefits of core aeration
- Loosens compacted soil and increases the availability of water and nutrients.
- Enhances oxygen levels in the soil, stimulating root growth and enhancing the activity of thatch-decomposing organisms.
- While removing cores of soil, the spoons also sever roots, rhizomes and stolons. Grass plants are stimulated to produce new shoots and roots that "fill up" the holes in the lawn and increase the density of the turf.
- Reduces water runoff.
- Increases the lawn's drought tolerance and improves its overall health.
Dethatching - Thatch is the layer of living and dead stems, roots, stolons, and rhizomes between the green blades of grass and the soil surface. The dethatching process is done with a tine attachment on the lawn mower that looses up that thatch layer. Then with either a bagger or sweeper the lawn clipping are picked up and taking away. Benefits of Dethatching:
- Will reduce the water evaporation in turn will mean less water of the lawn in summer time.
- Provides better air flow that will reduce the chances of fungal growth and insect infestation.
- Helps in the resists of weed germination
- Protects the lawn from frost damage
Slit Seeding - Slit seeding is done with a machine that cuts slots into the yard. Where the slot are cut into the grass that is where the seed is place into the slots. The seed is indirect contact with the soil so this provides the best situation for successful germination. Normally this process is done in both directions horizontally and vertically to make sure that we don’t miss a spot. Also with going in both direction that allows plenty of seed to germinate into healthy grass. The best time to seed is Late August and the month of September. After we are done slit seeding we apply a starter fertilizer to help speed up the process in growing a beautiful looking lawn. The starter fertilizer also helps in the deep growth of the root system. Fertilization - Fertilization is key element in keeping the lawn thick and a nice green looking color. When it comes to fertilizer there is some key thing that you have to know. The most important is what ingredients around being put down. This is determined by the weight in the bag or liquid form. The three major nutrients in a fertilizer: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The label read as N-P-K for what percentage is in the bag. In Minnesota it’s against the law to put down phosphorus on the lawn unless under a certain situation. Andy's Lawn Care provides a pound of nitrogen for every 1,000 sq ft of lawn. We also recommend that during the year four pounds of nitrogen is applied to the yard to provide optimal growth and appearance. Top of Page
Weed Control - Andy's Lawn Care provide weed control program that start off with a pre-emergent. This is applied in the spring time normally around late April. This application is to prevent the development of crabgrass in the yard. Also have products that are applied to the lawn that kill of dandelions and thistles. These are the three major weeds that need to be controlled in a yard. There is many more weeds that can be diagnosed with a lawn care analysis. Top of Page
